Plural Mixing System

April 2015

An automatic paint mixing system, sometimes called a proportioner or plural mixing system, can bring a lot of efficiencies to a paint operation. This automatically mixes your paint at proper ratios, eliminates pot life issues, measures paint use, and will give you an alarm if anything is wrong.

When is the right time to make this investment?

First, look at how much multi-component paint goes through your operation by total overall volume and by product. If your operations use the same primer and clear coat for all types of units and go through at least 500 gallons each a year, you may want to consider investing in a plural mixing system.

Additionally, consider how many colors your operation typically uses and how the percentages of each color used rank by volume. The highest utilized colors can be accomodated with little time to switch colors.

Finally, calculate the amount of paint waste you generate per year, as this will be reduced greatly after the installation of a plural mix system.

When the plural mix system is fully implemented, you will experience savings in labor, mixing errors, and waste. If these are all added together, the investment of $18,000 to $45,000 dollars can pay for itself in less than a year. This is an easy sell to upper management.

Manufacturers of plural mixing equipment have very useful online calculators to determine your return on investment. Visit one and find out for yourself if your operation is ready for a plural mixing system.
