AWX Performance Plus™ Refinish Systems Used By Many Successful Motorsports Teams

April 2014

Sherwin-Williams is honored to support the second annual NASCAR Race To Green initiative, which is taking place March 29 to April 27. As the “Official Transportation Finishes of NASCAR,” Sherwin-Williams applauds the NASCAR Green program, as NASCAR has long worked with dozens of motorsports teams on their sustainability programs. Sherwin-Williams is also supporting NASCAR’s green efforts through education initiatives and promoting awareness of low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints along with initial application for select teams currently in the industry.

Roush Fenway Racing and Turner Scott Motorsports are doing their part with sustainable practices. Roush Fenway Racing uses Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes’ AWX Performance Plus™ waterborne refinish system on each of its six race cars. AWX Performance Plus features an easy-to-apply, fast drying basecoat for excellent color match while meeting the strictest VOC limits in North America.

The No. 51 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Justin Algaier ran a special Sherwin Williams paint scheme this past weekend in Darlington and was also painted using Sherwin William’s AWX Performance Plus. The paint itself at highest potential has a 96% decrease in VOC emissions compared to solvent-borne basecoats and achieves 3.5 VOC compliance in all regulated areas.*

“Sherwin Williams and NASCAR should be applauded for educating NASCAR fans and the marketplace more generally, about the value and availability of low-VOC paints. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can cause cancer, neurologic, and reproductive harm and they are commonly used in paints. Once applied, VOCs evaporate into the air for months afterwards. By using its market and cultural influence to educate fans and other businesses about the availability of low-VOC paints and its ease of use, NASCAR and Sherwin-Williams are helping to move the marketplace towards a less toxic environment,” said Allen Hershkowitz, Ph.D. Senior Scientist for the NRDC.

By adding the “Official Transportation Finishes of NASCAR” sponsorship, which includes the automotive finishes category, Sherwin-Williams has further expanded its visibility as one of the leading product innovators and servicers to the collision repair and original equipment industries. Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes is the only direct distribution automotive paint manufacturer and provides service to its collision repair and OEM customers through nearly 200 company stores in the U.S. and Canada.

For years, some of the biggest names in racing have trusted their race car finishes to Sherwin-Williams. “More than a dozen NASCAR teams currently use Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes and we aim to help teams cross the finish line and ensure that their cars and their sponsors always look good circling the track,” said Bobby Moody, Director of Motorsports for Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. “We also want to assure them of our commitment to utilize the most environmentally responsible coatings products in the world and plan to expand application and educational awareness of the lower VOC paint to more race teams.”
